Retired Auburn Police Captain, Frank M. deGraffenried III, 76, (shown above with his medals) passed away Monday, January 1, 2007. He was born May 11, 1930, in Columbus, Georgia, spent part of his childhood in Pittsview, Alabama and lived most of his life in Auburn. After graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp., where he served during the Korean War. He received numerous awards for his service including a Bonze Star Medal with a Combat V Device, and recognition for his extraordinary heroism at the Chosin Reservoir in the Inchon Landing. Mr. deGraffenried served with the Auburn Police Department for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was the first and one of the most successful detectives at Auburn. He was known and respected for his dedication to duties, his ability to solve difficult cases and is fairness to his fellow man. He was a member of the Marine Corps League (Billy Stepflug detachment #1064) and the Fraternal Order of Police. Frank was the most loyal husband, dad and friend anyone could have. He is survived by his wife, Trish deGraffenried, his children, Cheryl (Jerry) Sparks, Frank (Jo) deGraffenried IV, Jan Hall, Karen (Frank)Higgins, and Valerie Edeker, eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held in Pittsview, Alabama, on January 2, 2007. Fredericks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
