Our USMC Birthday Ball was held on Thursday November 10th at the Elks Club in Rapid City. Vietnam veteran, author, and new member was the guest speaker. We are constantly looking for addresses of Northern Plains area Marines serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to send care packages to. Contact Thad Wasson at 605 388-5280. We welcome the new Warrior Detachment in Hot Springs, SD. They have just started, but will be signing up new Marine Corps League members in short order. The Black Hills Detachment is located at the east gate to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota; sacred to the Lakota people and also to those of us who are immigrants to this island in the plains. The Black Hills are home to Mount Rushmore, the "Shrine of Democracy"; Crazy Horse Mountain (the shrine to the Native heros of the past); Jewel Cave National Monument (the 2nd largest cave in the world, and still being mapped); and Wind Cave National Park. There is also beautiful Custer State Park, 72,000 acres of wonders, and summer home to two presidents. All this is located within the Black Hills National Forest, one of the most productive lumber forests in the Rocky Mountain Region. Hiking trails galore. Come visit us!
