All information on this page was reviewed and revised as needed on October 17, 2010 by Robert Hauser, Web Sergeant, The Bob Smith Detachment #784.................Persons seeking further information about the Detachment or it's activities are asked to make initial contact through the "Contact Us" button on the Detachment's Website (bobsmith784.webs.com) or by postal mail to P. O. Box 11, Hummelstown, PA 17036. Your requests or questions will receive prompt attention...............Member's personal addresses and telephone numbers were deliberately not posted on this page to ensure the continued security of their privacy...................The Bob Smith Detachment 784 will be celebrating its 20th Year Anniversary in September 2010................... This is an active Detachment with approximately 125 members on the roster and, on average, between 20-35% of the members attending monthly Detachment meetings....................... This Detachment actively supports the Capital Area-PA Young Marines, the Toys-4-Tots Program, the Keystone Area Council-PA Boy Scout Eagle Recognition & Awards Dinner and other Scout Projects, the local Lower Dauphin High School's band and sports programs..........It also participates in the annual Armed Forces Day Event on City Island, Harrisburg, PA, the Hummelstown Memorial Day Parade and provides the rifle volley, taps and wreaths for the Memorial Day Services at three cemeteries (1 in and 2 just outside Hummelstown). The rifles and blank ammo are provided by the Detachment Rifle Team and Pistol Team members................The Detachment was instrumental in providing a sigificant number of volunteers who were willing to provide the labor to ensure the Avenue of Flags display at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery could and would be displayed frequently throughout the year. The Detachment has championed it's position further to the Cemetery Director by promoting the project to the public and collecting interment flags from the families responding to the plea for flag donations. Those privately held donated flags are subsequently flown on the Avenue of Flags display (pictures on our website). In late fall of 2009, two members of the Detachment convinced and gained permission from the Cemetery Director to present the Avenue of Flags constantly for an extended period during 2010, from a week before Armed Forces day in May until a week or two after Veteran's Day in November. The Detachment has several members on the Cemetery's Memorial Council and a few as key officers..............The Detachment also shares the cost of the Hummelstown Borough's Easter Party for the local children and the Christmas Party Luncheon for the local units of the DAV and the local Purple Heart unit and the Detachment............There is also a September Detachment Family Picnic held in the park.............And the Detachment Marine Ball in November usually is attended by about 100 people. This year (2010) marks the start of what will be an annual tradition of performing a "Marine Corps Cake Ceremony" at the Ball...........Also, at various times through the year, the Detachment members visit the hospitalized vets at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Lebanon, PA. Continuing to serve our Vets, the Detachment has provided Marine T-Shirts, Birthday Ball Cake, ice cream, pre-recorded VCR movies and DVD's for the hospital's entertainment committee to distribute throughout the wards and hours of visitation to fellow vets hospitalized there..........And nearly all of this is funded by the efforts of the dedicated members who sit for hours in the sun, rain, cold and heat of the various climes and places we go to sell raffle tickets or to work the stands at the fireman's carnival or the Fuzzy-Few Carnival in Hummelstown or participate in the "Eat-Outs" at several restaurants and, of course, from the many generous donations from friends and families of our community.................................TAPS:..From January 2009 to present (October 2010), our Supreme Commandant has quietly called members Robert Knight, George Hunter, Mary Alexander, Austin Geiling, Jr., Lewis Gentry, Jr., Donald Snyder and Joseph LaSlavic to be with Him. They are missed by their families and this Detachment.
