The Marine Corps League was organized by an Act of Congress in 1937 as a National Organization. In March 1947 a group of former Marines in the Plainfield area decided to organize a local charter group and form a Detachment. After some deliberation the Detachment was named after Joseph J. Gardner, a Guadalcanal Marine who returned home only to meet with a fatal auto accident with his bride, while on their honeymoon. The first meeting was held March 1947 in the Park Hotel, Plainfield. Officers were elected at this time with Marine Edward Beams installed as the First Commandant. Any honorably discharged or active Marine is welcome to join the Marine Corps League and partake of the proud tradition it recognizes.
