Welcome to the Oahe Marine Detachment 851 web page! We are located in Pierre, the State Capitol of South Dakota, an area where PATRIOTISM is a way of life, and not some slogan pinned on a sleeve when it is politically correct. We are fortunate enough to be in the middle of the best fishing, hunting, and recreational area in the USA. If you get tired of catching salmon, northen pike, walleyes, trout, small mouth and silver bass and catfish, you can hunt pheasants, ducks, geese and grouse. If you still have the energy left, you can hunt deer and antelope. We are a small but active Detachment. We are involved in Memorial Day and Veteran's Day Programs. We recently purchased 144 American Flags to be placed on Veteran's graves on Memorial Day. We provide a Color Guard for football games and other civic functions. We have instituted a "Marine of the Month" Program, where a Marine of the area is highlighted with a short biography of his service to our country and community. We have at least one member attend the funeral services of every Veteran conducted in this area, no matter what branch of the Armed Forces they served in, letting their Family members and the community know that their service to our country is appreciated. At these services, we present a special Sympathy Card. In addition, with the purchase of a "Ceremonial" Bugle, we render "TAPS" as a part of the Military Funeral Honors. We are involved in fund raising projects to earn money for community projects. We were actively involved in South Dakota's World War II (2001) and Korean War (2004) Memorial Dedication ceremonies and parades, as well as the Vietnam War Memorial dedication ceremony and parade, in September of 2006. When in the area at any other time, feel free to meet with us on the 3rd Thursday of every month, at 1930 hours.
