Palmetto Marine Detachment 829 is the 3rd oldest Detachment in the State of South Carolina and keeps an average membership of 100 members. Palmetto Marines Detachment 829 was chartered on November 10th, 1992. Some of our Founders were Harold E. "Speedy" Wilson, Medal of Honor Recipient in the Korean War. His name has been given to a newer detachment in the Columbia Area. Also Col. Evans Carlson, USMC was a member of his father's famous Unit, Marine Corps Raiders during World War II. Major Harry C. Johnson, XO of VMF 214 "Blacksheep", is also a member of our Detachment. However, he lives in Albama so he does not make to many meetings. The Detachment meets in downtown Columbia, near the University of South Carolina, at the American Legion Post #6, 200 Pickens Street, Columbia, SC 29250. The Post has a large parking lot, several meeting rooms, a recreation room and Lounge on premises. Our Membership is composed of Marines from WWII thru Desert Storm, active Marines in Iraq, Associate and Honorary members. The Palmetto Marines are very active with Columbia area community affairs and charitable events. Palmetto Marines work closely with the Marine Corps Reserve Unit Co. F, 4th Light Armored Reconnaisance Battalion, the United States Marine Corps Coordination Council of Columbia, Dorn VA Hospital, Epworth Children's Home, Toys for Tots, Carolina Children's Home, Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, Children's Cancer Center, Ronald McDonald House, The Celebrate Freedom Foundation, the Cultural Council and many other events in the Columbia Area. Fort Jackson, one of the Army's largest Training bases, is located in Columbia, which is also the Capital City of SC. Lake Murray, which has 750 miles of shoreline, is located within 20 minutes of downtown (great fishing). Columbia is centrally located two hours from the mountains, Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Marine Corps Recruit Depot,Parris Island.
