Common folklore holds that Uncle Sam's origins trace back to soldiers stationed in Upstate New York, who would receive barrels of meat during the War of 1812 stamped with the initials U.S. The soldiers joked that those initials were a reference to the troops meat supplier,(Uncle)Sam Wilson of Troy, New York. On September 15, 1961 The U.S. Congress passed a resolution honoring Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York as the originator of the National Symbol of Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam Wilson is buried in Oakwood Cemetery,Troy, New York.
